On Beyond Separation: A New Becoming, Matt LaJoie offers his first foray into longform automatic composition on five-string banjo. Recorded to honor an instrument that had long lain dormant in various closets and studio spaces over the past decade, the silver-toned emanations of the banjo leap and dance from the drumhead, spilling over each other in intoxicating live loops that suggest inspiration drawn from Terry Riley and Laraaji more than any traditional banjo player. In contrast to the majestic orchestrations of LaJoie's new Everlasting Spring disc (the art edition of which includes Beyond Separation as its exclusive bonus cassette), the kinetic movement present on four of these five improvisations inspire images of ecstatic dance or a caravan's sand-strewn journeying; only the brief "A New Becoming" closes the book with a deep breath and a sip from a long-sought oasis. While it remains to be seen if this tape will be a one-off experiment in Appalachian Kosmische or the early steps of an adept's long path, Beyond Separation: A New Becoming captures the joy of experimentation toward the synthesis of disparate cultures and philosophies, discovering a deeper, more complex and more perfect harmony beneath every surface.
