about

*UPDATE FROM MATT*
9.17.2021

With today's track post, "Affirmation", the Colander collection has reached its conclusion: 226 tracks, and exactly 24 hours of new solo music released weekdaily to subscribers since November 6th, 2020. Thank you all for being along for this journey. When I began recording and releasing my experiments in this way, I had no planned end point; once eight hours of music had been released, I knew I was to create a day's duration before closing the book on the project. I suppose that makes this the Afterword.

Some of the recordings that comprise this compendium have been collected, edited, and released (to-date) as:
ML Wah - Big Air 2 [Flower Room]
Thick Air - Transorbital Cantrips [Flower Room]
Matt LaJoie - Creek Baptism [Flower Room]
Matt LaJoie - Star Maps [Eye Vybe]
Matt LaJoie - Pan-Gaia [The Jewel Garden]
Matt LaJoie - Cosmic Commission [Garden Portal]

Additionally, the forthcoming Matt LaJoie releases Red Resonant Earth, Land Mass, and Buckfull are all comprised of recordings from the Colander sessions; beyond these, I have Colander tracks set aside for future Thick Air (x3), ML Wah (x2), and Matt LaJoie (no less than 7) full-length albums or tapes. The idea with this project was to give my most generous and reliable supporters access to not only rare and exclusive unreleased tracks, but to also provide an early preview of albums in-progress that will eventually see wider release. I never expected quite so many tracks to make the cut, and working with the fruits of Colander has ultimately been like a bountiful harvest canned and jarred into logical containers, stored in a quiet root cellar for future feast.

I hope being in on the process has been enjoyable and revelating in some way, tearing down the walls that shroud the work of a musician from an audience that encounters it as pure sound: intention and creative energy joining in vibrational manifestation.

*****

On the perpetually unfolding Colander album, prolific guitarist and multi-instrumental improviser Matt LaJoie offers a peek behind the curtain at the practice and process behind many of the hundred-plus albums he has recorded and released in his lifetime. An echo of his Maia Maiestas recording project as Cursillistas in May 2008—in which he recorded a 20-minute cassette's worth of original music each day that month, releasing the tapes as one-of-one editions packaged with items gathered over the course of that day—here LaJoie endeavors to digitally release a new song, demo, improvisation, or meditative drone every weekday. A subscriber digital exclusive, some tracks will possibly be edited and collected for public release in the future, but created first and foremost as an offering for our most dedicated supporters. The intent of Colander is to demystify the creation process behind some of LaJoie's most beloved solo albums (Everlasting Spring, The Center and the Fringe, Big Air, Ashram to the Stars, Wasp Stings the Last Bitter Flavor, etc.) while providing a space to share a more intimate communion with the audience in these days without live, in-person performance.
