Raw, real, and searing, the unhinged instrumental improvisations on Forged in the Crucible--Matt LaJoie's seventh solo guitar release of 2020--are a return to the wandering and heavily experimental electric guitar vistas of his earliest lo-fi cassettes. Recalling both the intuitively abstract, free-flying movements of his 2014 Cabin Floor Esoterica debut and the blasted kosmische of live Flower Room debut "The Fountain" a few years later, Forged in the Crucible ups the heaviness and tension-release quotient thanks to the custom "Green Freaker" analog fuzz pedal built for Matt by Anderson Sound Systems. With its thick growl running through the live-looping and sample-modifying function of the DL4, the overdriven chain ends at a tiny, battery-powered Mini Twin amp, pushed helplessly beyond its limits.

Gathering storm clouds as a means to study shadows; waving a gloved hand to dissipate incense smoke from the altar; discovering in the depths of despair a higher purpose to forge ahead: these are the images and emotions called forth by Forged in the Crucible's flinty waves. As the live performance ends with a loop-flip of seemingly impossible beauty given its source, the apparent mystery that veils the divine in every difficult moment is lifted, briefly, as a weightless wisp and curl from the burnt husk of materiality.
