about

A moniker adopted by Matt LaJoie for a time roughly in confluence with his initial home-recording blasts as Herbcraft, Endless Caverns was an early turn toward the kind of loop-based automatic composition and exploration of sacred drone that have recently flowered on such solo releases as The Divine Interval and The Center and The Fringe. For listeners who resonated with those transmissions from Now time, this long-awaited yet timely excavation of Endless Caverns' one and only multi-track, multi-instrumental session offers a peek into the origin of a sound whose waves continue to lap ashore.

As the title Jewel Mining suggests, the songs here steep themselves in foggy beds of deep, dank drone; cavernous reverb echoing through miles of darkness, only to return with glittering fragments of delicate beauty. Slow-motion electric guitar loops and bowed dilruba provide the foundation, with DI guitars and the occasional wooden flute cutting through the haze with wide-open, free-flying leads, spraying light and color like a helmet-mounted flashlight refracting off stalactites. As the most hi-fi (relatively speaking) and compositionally complex of any recordings under the Endless Caverns banner, these three pieces provide a compelling missing link between many of the projects LaJoie has premiered in the convening eight-plus years.

Recorded in between cassettes of intentional lo-fi live guitar drone with evocative titles such as Chakra Ledge (Cabin Floor Esoterica), Colour Breathing (Eiderdown Records), Sensei Deprivation (Existential Cloth), and Magi Hymnal (L'animaux Tryst), Jewel Mining signaled a bold step forward for both the Endless Caverns sound and LaJoie's method of creation more generally, yet has long retained nothing more than "lost recordings" status. Initially planned for release as half of a split-tape in a never-completed 2011 box set for a now-extinct label, Flower Room is pleased to finally carry Jewel Mining into the light - perhaps in just its right time.
