about

On March 5, 2020, Matt LaJoie performed an extended solo guitar improvisation at the energetically charged locale of Montauk Salt Cave in Manhattan’s East Village, celebrating the release of his second solo LP Everlasting Spring. There, amid walls lined with thick bricks of pink salt, a salt-rock beach underfoot and synthetically twinkling skies above, Matt’s 10-string acoustic and 6-string electric guitars wove threads of kosmische percolation and skywise exploration, raga-inspired guitar soli, and loop-based ambient drone beds to produce a calming-yet-searching set of music for the intimate crowd of 20. Presented here in complete, unedited and lightly mixed & mastered form from the field recording of that set, Pink Hymnalia places the listener “in the room” and offers a glimpse into Matt’s intended 2020 live solo presence (all subsequent shows planned in support of Everlasting Spring were canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic), while also allowing the echo of that one evening to reverberate beyond the confines of time and space.
