about

My full-length vinyl debut as ML Wah was released in May 2019, but the version of Deep Roots that the public heard was somewhat different from the instrumental global jazz record I had initially set out to make when recording began in the summer of 2017. That year, I adopted the ML Wah moniker for multi-instrumental music combining devotional folk, international/cosmic jazz, new age, and roots & dub, and, inspired by genre syntheses explored by Count Ossie and Mystic Revelation, Cherry & Riley, Abdullah Ibrahim, Mwandishi, and others, I intended to leave my guitar tucked away completely in favor of a loosely-tuned tack piano, melody-first electric bass lines, and improvised leads played entirely on melodica and trumpet.

Wordless chorus beds a dozen voices deep, some devotional chants, and a couple traditional lead vocal melodies eventually wound their way into Deep Roots' tapestry over the ensuing year-and-a-half, yet in some ways, after months of having listened to the instrumental version of the album privately at home before vocals (and a couple electric guitar overdubs) were added, it strangely still feels like the definitive version of the album to me.

I'm pleased to finally share this original instrumental version of Deep Roots with you all on the two-year anniversary of the album's initial Flower Room release.
