Mirrored Night is my first album of solo piano improvisations. Despite—or perhaps due to—the fact I've never taken piano lessons, this was an album I've wanted to try making for several years. The concept was to find how much my style of live-looped automatic compositions on guitar would translate to an instrument I truly have never studied; one that, in fact, I've remained fairly intimidated by my entire life. By introducing my most familiar improvisational style to a most unfamiliar instrument, I was curious to discover what sounds would unveil themselves through the process.

I finally had long-term access to a piano—albeit a loosely-tuned one—beginning in March 2021, and set out to learn its quirks. Once I found a key and scales that were (at least mostly) in tune in the middle octaves of the keyboard, I played freely, casually, and occasionally for a few months before finally feeling ready to set up a single microphone to record on the morning of June 16, 2021. A very kind, generous, and mystical friend had passed on a few days earlier, and I was inspired to create music for her ascent from the physical plane. She had deep affinities with the moon, owls, morpho butterflies; as the improvisation unfolded, my consciousness merged with something transcendent, and my fingers began to trace these images on the keys. I can only describe the recording process as feeling enveloped in the most comforting way. It reminds me profoundly of Home. Wherever this music came from, it is now ours, from the loving Beyond.
